Winter Playgrounds

The marquee destinations never change. Tahoe. Salt Lake. The Colorado Rockies. Or, for the adventurous, maybe Whistler or Banff in Western Canada.
Las Vegas and skiing rarely are mentioned in the same breath, yet a big dose of winter and all the snow that goes with it lie just around the proverbial corner. Ski destinations within driving distance of Las Vegas beckon desert dwellers and visitors alike ‹ to nearby Mount Charleston, Utah, Arizona, and California ‹ via well-maintained highways that skirt some of the most scenic areas in the Southwest.
Las Vegas' close proximity to the Spring Mountain Range, with a 6,000-foot elevation gain in fewer than 50 miles, gives the area an unusual capability to combine warm-weather sightseeing and winter sports. Resident skiers don't mind that tourists rarely venture to the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort, only an hour's drive from the city and perfectly suited for a day of skiing. ...
