Don't get me wrong, I like the desert just fine. But the high granite peaks and alpine meadows of California's Sierra Nevada offer one of the best outdoor escapes from Las Vegas. The Sierra lies just four hours west of Las Vegas, if you take the right route and keep your foot on the gas. The drive winds up in the agricultural Owens Valley, where steep roads take climbers, mountain bikers, fishermen, and other outdoor enthusiasts from the Sierra's foot back to crystal streams and white cliffs dappled with sunlight.

Climbing trips to the Range of Light are a young tradition for me and my climbing partner Dan Briley. For months before each adventure, I look forward to climbing flawless granite under cerulean skies and retiring at sundown to camp under tall pines. ...
