Bringing the Bard to Cedar City

The line linking Shakespeare and Sabu may seem long and convoluted. But it runs directly through Cedar City, Utah ‹ and, more precisely, through Fred C. Adams, the man largely responsible for putting Cedar City on the theatrical map.

The Shakespeare connection hardly ranks as a surprise. Adams, after all, founded ‹ and serves as executive producer of ‹ the Utah Shakespearean Festival, which two years ago captured a coveted Tony Award as America¹s outstanding regional theater.

Adams discovered the Bard long before, however. He was only 5 when his parents ‹ both of whom had been involved in theater ‹ took him to see celebrated European director Max Reinhardt¹s production of A Midsummer Night¹s Dream at the Hollywood Bowl. (Another youngster, Mickey Rooney, made a particular impression playing the mischievous sprite Puck.)...
