Cathedral Gorge's Cliffs & Spires

Cathedral Gorge State Park is one of those magic spots it's still possible to find in Nevada, remarkably different yet uncrowded even in perfect weather and a long weekend. I happened to head there on Easter weekend, hitting the road by 9 a.m. on Friday morning, yet the traffic was very light once I turned off Interstate 15 and north onto U.S. 93.

It took only about an hour to find myself a country that delighted eyes grown weary of the scorched landscape of Clark County. In Nye County's Pahranagat Valley, cottonwood trees soaked their roots in two reservoirs just downhill from the two-lane blacktop. Farmers plowed their fields. Horses and cattle grazed in rich pastures....
