Where Angels Sing

When desert-weary pioneers made their way into this spectacular Utah canyonland of towering cliffs and wild romantic chasms, they called it Zion, a biblical name meaning "heaven." Today, visitors to the region come away with the same opinion. Desert, mountain, river, and forest collide agreeably in what may be the Westıs most accessible national park.

Zion is a favorite subject for photographers year-round. None has been more successful in capturing its beauty than the acclaimed David Muench, who shot the photos on these pages.

Widely published in both books and magazines, Muench's photos helped make Zion one of the most popular secondary destinations for visitors to Las Vegas. It's only 160 miles from the Strip, nearly all of that on high-speed Interstate 15, which passes just west of the park. It's even closer to the rising Nevada resort town of Mesquite, which hugs the Arizona state line. Southern Utah's relatively mild climate means Zion is open throughout the year. ...
