This well-maintained trail makes a giant loop to the north of Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort. It starts at an easy pace and heads west. The trail soon forks; take either fork, since they reunite in about 100 yards.
The trail winds through a thick forest of white fir trees and aspens that turn golden yellow in the fall. The trees help keep you cool on the moderate incline as the trail ascends a series of switchbacks.
Climbing to a summit, the trail then snakes down the back side of a mountain. After two miles, it joins an abandoned gravel road. Soon the trail forks; the route to the left goes to Bonanza Peak trailhead. Continue on the Bristlecone Trail, which stays on the abandoned road and descends into a canyon.
At about four miles, the trail passes the Old Mill Road, which heads downhill to the right of a picnic area. The trail terminates at a dirt parking lot. Follow the dirt road to State Route 156.
Walking west on 156 for about a half mile brings you back to the trailhead.
